Transify is a visualization tool that helps you prioritize your public transit improvements. As we enter our new normal transit agencies across the country are looking to tweak their networks as to support ridership recovery. Keep reading to find out how granular ridership, reliability, and demographic data put together can help you build back a better network.

Ridership Analysis

  1. See which route segments are busier than others. A route is more than its boardings per hour. Seeing where the demand generators are can help you restructure your routes for higher productivity.
  2. Spot where there’s turnover. Discover high-activity stops and transfer points, and find opportunities for timed transfers, better schedule coordination, or route realignments.

This Transify-generated chart tells you all you need to know about a route. The dark blue bars represent the boardings at each stop, the light blue bars the alightings at each stop, and the line the departure load at each stop.

Access to Transit

  1. Find gaps in coverage right away. Sometimes sprawl can outrun your network. A redesign can be a chance to start a conversation on what it would take to ensure that all your residents and jobs are connected to transit.
  2. Before and After for Stop Removals and Route Realignments. Removing stops close together? Looking to remove that circuitous detour a route makes? See what the impacts are to inform your recommendations.
  3. Before and After for new Routes and Stops. How many people or jobs will that route extension bring access to? Find out in seconds to help make the case for it.

This Transify-generated map shows who can access the proposed bus route extension in a 5-minute walk.

Span of Service

  1. Before and After for new Periods of Service. Is your agency looking to expand all day or weekend service? Find out how many residents and jobs this will provide access to.
  2. Go beyond rush hour. Do you have transit deserts on evenings or weekends? Do non-9-5 workers live or work in those areas? Find out in seconds if there’s an opportunity to attract new customers as to make the case for it.

This Transify-generated map shows the service available at 9 p.m. on a Sunday. Residents living in the red service areas might not be able to rely on transit for shift work or a night out. A span of service map can help you make the case for narrowing the gap between peak and off-peak coverage.

Frequency is Freedom

  1. Visualize access to frequent transit. How many residents have access to transit that works with their schedule rather than the other way around? More access to frequent routes leads to more ridership.
  2. Before and After for Frequency Increases. How many more jobs and opportunities will residents be able to access with more frequent service? A newfound ability to seamlessly transfer between routes could hugely improve connectivity.
Figure 4: Impact of improving one route's frequency from every 30 to every 15 minutes, making downtown and 2.4x more jobs reachable in a 30-minute trip.

Reliability

  1. Design service that matches reality. Visualize and comb through running times across hundreds of days to set the right schedule times.

The chart below shows the scheduled running time compared to the actual average running time. By varying the percentiles and time spans Transify can help you set running times that are reliable and cost-efficient.

Microtransit

And this one’s a bonus. Poor land-use and tricky road networks can make it difficult to operate fixed routes. Could it be a case for microtransit? Our integrated demographic, coverage, and ridership analysis can help you determine whether microtransit is the right fit for replacing a fixed route or expanding service to new areas.
